Frequently Asked Questions
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a safe, natural and effective treatment for almost any type of health concern. It is just one of the many modalities
used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It involves the shallow insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body. This treats disease, relieves pain, and maintains health and well-being. Acupuncture treats the root cause, thus eliminating your symptoms. Acupuncture works by redirecting and balancing the flow of energy throughout the body, which encourages healing. Scientific studies have shown that acupuncture: regulates hormones, releases endorphins (the body's natural "pain killers"), influences the production of neurotransmitters and immune cells, relaxes muscles, increases circulation, and calms the nervous system. Acupuncture has been used for over 3000 years in China and its effectiveness is based on thousands
of years of observation and clinical practice.
What does acupuncture treat?
The World Health Organization recognizes Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine’s ability to treat over 45 common disorders including:
- Musculoskeletal: arthritis, back, neck, knee and shoulder pain.
- Gastrointestinal: gastritis, food allergies, peptic ulcer, chronic diarrhea, constipation, indigestion, heartburn, IBS, and nausea.
- Gynecological: irregular, heavy or painful menstruation, infertility in women and men, PMS, menopause, fibroids, and endometriosis.
- Neurological: stroke rehabilitation, neuropathy, dizziness, migraine headaches.
- Urogenital: urinary tract infection, incontinence and sexual dysfunction.
- Respiratory: sinusitis, asthma, allergies, bronchitis and common cold.
- Circulatory: hypertension, angina, arteriosclerosis and anemia.
- Emotional and psychological disorders: depression, stress, anxiety and insomnia.
- Addictions: smoking, alcohol withdrawl.
- Eye, ear, nose and throat disorders
- Supportive therapy for chronic disease: cancer, AIDS, hepatitis, autoimmune conditions.
Is acupuncture painful?
Acupuncture is typically relaxing and rejuvenating. Many people fall asleep during the treatments. Acupuncture needles do not resemble the type used for drawing blood or for injections. They are very fine, nearly the size of a human hair. Only disposable, sterilized, individually wrapped needles are used.
What should I expect at my treatment?
Your first visit will typically last 1 ˝ hours and follow up appointments last 45 minutes to 1 hour. At your first visit I will spend time asking you questions about your current health concerns as well as go over your health history and lifestyle.
You lie comfortably on a massage table for the treatment. In most cases, you will be fully clothed. Once the needles are in, you will relax on the table for 15-30 minutes.
After the treatment, we discuss a plan for future treatment, possibly prescribe a Chinese herbal formula to take at home, and discuss things you can do at home to enhance your treatments.
Each patient is unique, so each patient’s treatment plan will be different. Results vary according to many different factors. Age, duration of symptoms, lifestyle and your own commitment to healing all influence how long it takes for you to feel improvement.
The effects of acupuncture are cumulative and your progress will be measured and discussed each visit.
Will my insurance cover acupuncture?
